Imagine a world where every librarian added one more reference to Wikipedia.

#1Lib1Ref (abbreviation for one librarian, one reference) is an international campaign running twice per year from January 15th to February 5th and May 15th to June 5th with the aim of adding references to Wikipedia. It calls on library workers around the world, as well as anyone who has a passion for free knowledge, to add missing references to articles on Wikipedia.

In Canada, every year, from January 15th to February 5th, we organize a contest for library workers as part of the #1Lib1Ref campaign.

How to participate in four basic steps

Find a Wikipedia article that needs a reference.
- You can use the Citation Hunt tool to find an article with "citation needed".
Find a reliable source to support the information on the article.
Add the citation, making sure to use proper Wikipedia style.
Include the hashtag #1Lib1Ref in the edit summary.

Why #1Lib1Ref?

Wikipedia is one of the first stops for the people searching for information. It is an invaluable part of every researcher's process. As such, more references make Wikipedia a better tool for all.

Wikipedia articles operate on an assumption of "verifiability". As such, every statement in a Wikipedia article should be "verifiable" through a cited source. By adding a citation for a reliable source in any Wikipedia article, you help Wikipedia readers worldwide.

What is a good source for Wikipedia?

A few things make references good for Wikipedia:

The reference must be published, meaning that the source must possess a certain editorial quality (and it's even better if it is from a peer-reviewed source).
The reference must be reliable. You can read Wikipedia:Reliable sources on the English Wikipedia for more information.
The reference must support the information in the article, meaning that the added source must support the text that is in the article (if the source is useful for the article in general, but does not support a specific statement, it can be added in the "Further reading" section instead of adding a footnote).
