Grants/Requests/2020/Diving Deeper into Wikipedia speaker series at University of Alberta

Description

edit

Our full project plan is detailed in this document.

Our goal is to explore topics that help us contemplate the complexities and challenges of creating a truly collaborative, ethical, representative encyclopedia for our times. We hope that the impact is to prompt participants to think beyond their individual editing work, and to contemplate the "why" of editing Wikipedia. We are also keen to feature three incredible academics / activists whose work deserves much more exposure!

We believe this fits into Wikimedia Canada's strategic goal to encourage the development of open knowledge communities across this land, and we see particular alignment with your communities development and Indigenous peoples on Wikipedia programs. Our goals for this event series align with Wikimedia Canada's stated intent to "diversify the contributors to the Wikimedia projects, with a focus on the gender gap," and in our third event of the series we will be discussing Wikipetcia Atikamekw Nehiromowin as part of our conversation about Indigenizing Wikipedia.

Our anticipated audience is, due to COVID, anyone in our area or neighbouring timezones. We are keen to engage folks who are interested in examining the why of editing Wikipedia and integrating knowledge about the social and political imperatives of Wikipedia editing into their own work as an editor. We will also welcome folks who haven't used Wikipedia, in the hope that we can inspire new editors to contribute to the site with a social justice lens.

Dissemination plan: This series will be advertised in the many listservs that we have available to us at the University of Alberta and as scholars and librarians in this land. We will be creating a Facebook event and using social media to promote the series. Our three speakers come from academia, the arts / education, and nonprofit, and they are in Vancouver, Whitehorse, and Baltimore. It is our hope that the speakers' advertisement of the series in their networks will also help spread the word.

The talks will be recorded and posted online via the University of Alberta streaming media repository with an open liscense for access after the event.
