Grants/Requests/2023/Présentation à Manawan : Les six saisons Atikamekw

At the end of the 1970s, Radio-Canada commissioned Pierre Dinel and Pierre Hivon to shoot a documentary series on the Atikamekw way of life entitled Les six saisons des attikameks. Presented at the Cinémathèque québécoise, several members of the Atikamekw nation traveled from Manawan to Montreal to watch the series for the first time. It was on this occasion that the WikiClub Metapeckeka expressed the desire to make a screening at the Cikowic Elders' House and at the Otapi secondary school for the entire community of Manawan.

Projet

In 2019, Thérèse Ottawa finds the filmmakers Pierre Hivon and Pierre Dinel on Facebook and asks them if there are not archives of their passages at the end of 1970, beginning of 1980. The two filmmakers give several boxes to Thérèse who digitizes more about 1000 negatives, slides and photos with Wikimedia Canada's specialized scanner.

On January 24 and 25, 2023, two representatives of Wikimedia Canada, as well as filmmakers Pierre Dinel and Pierre Hivon will travel to Manawan for presentations, discussions and to collect information from elders in order to better document the Archives donated to Wikimedia. One of the objectives is to describe the actions, recognize the people on each of the 1000 photos; as Daniel, an archivist at BAnQ, said: “An undescribed archival fonds has very little value”.

The Manawan Educational Services will pay for the printing of one hundred special "Six Seasons Atikamekw" jerseys, the gymnasium rental fees for the presentation on January 25, as well as the graphics and organizational costs generated by these two days. Wikimedia Canada and Manawan Educational Services would be the funders for this project to take place.

As the culmination of this project, started in 2019, will be to record the elders who comment on the photos, the other objective is to write a blog post in order to tell the fabulous story of the boxes filled with archives that were stored the cellars of the two Pierres for more than 40 years!
