Grants/Requests/2023/Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Edmonton's Queer History
Description
editIn partnership with the Edmonton Queer History Project (EQHP) and Art + Feminism we are planning an in-person edit-a-thon on June 10, 2023. Our goal is to help people learn about Wikipedia and the Edmonton Queer History Project, get editing support from new and experienced Wikipedians, and help improve the world's largest online encyclopedia by making it more inclusive and representative of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. We plan on having two workshops, one on Wikipedia and how to edit and another on local queer history archives and resources that can be used in Wikipedia. More information can be found on our event dashboard
This event is supported by Edmonton Queer History Project, MacEwan University Library, the University of Alberta Library, and the MacEwan Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity.

editActivity Report
editOn June 10, 2023 we held a 4 hour wikipedia edit-a-thon at the Round House at MacEwan University. We had one room dedicated to a 2 hour editing workshop with an which included live editing demos and discussion of resources. In total we had approximatly 32 people drop by and 28 editors sign on the event dashboard. There were a few more people who wanted to sign up as editors a bit later, but had issues creating an account due to Wikipedia blocking our IP address.
In the end two articles where created (Flashback Gay Bar and Edmonton Queer History Project), and 25 articles were editing. The articles that were edited spanned a wide variety of Edmonton-related topics including people (Michael Phair, Sherry McKibben, Billy-Ray Belcourt, Chester Ronning, Mary Imrie, Jean Wallbridge), places (Flashback Gay Bar, Grey Nuns Community Hospital, Citadel Theatre, Princess Theatre, Alberta Legislature Building, Common Woman Books, Downtown Edmonton), organizations (Alberta Health Services, Edmonton Queer History Project, CJSR-FM, Stop Climate Chaos), events (Edmonton International Fringe Festival, Edmonton Pride, Alberta Literary Awards, K-Days), and lists (List of people from Edmonton, List of people from Alberta).
