Grants/Requests/2024/National Indigenous History Month Edit-a-Thon

Description

edit

This grant will help support a Wikipedia and Wikidata edit-a-thon organized in honour of National Indigenous History month. The activities will take place on June 20, 2024. The activities are organized between Dalhousie libraries and the Department of Information Science in the Faculty of Management at Dalhousie University.

The event will take place between 11 am and 4 pm Atlantic time in the Ko’jua Okuom Room, in the Killam Library at Dalhousie University. The Ko’jua Okuom Room is a special Indigenous gathering and student place. The contributions of participants will focus on Mi'kma'ki and Mi’kmaq peoples and culture and contribution suggestion.

The event will include 2 instructional sessions, one on Wikipedia and one on Wikidata. Laptops will be provided to those needing laptops.

Content related to Mi'kma'ki and Mi’kmaq peoples and culture is underrepresented in Wikipedia, with articles on key cultural activities, such as the game Waltes, absent, a lack of biographies of key figures, and there is a need to better organize content across Wikipedia. The growth of a Mi’kmaq presence within the libraries at Dalhousie and the launch of an Indigenous space means there are opportunities to consider outreach activities such as this edit-a-thon. The event also represents an opportunity for collaboration between Dalhousie libraries and the information science program on campus, providing opportunities for information studies professors, students and librarians to work together. Promotion for the event will be supported by the libraries and Information Science programs. A dashboard has been created to help support event tracking.

This event is conceived as the first event of a potential recurring series of events, with the potential to hold additional events in October 2024 for Mi’kmaq history month.
