CIRCULATION OF FREE CULTURE IN THE FRANCOPHONE DIGITAL SPHERE: DIVERSITY OR OCCIDENTALOCENTRISM?
world social sciences forum - social transformations and the digital age - Montreal
Focus: How are digital technologies transforming the social sciences?
Sunday October 13th, 2013 | 13:00 - 14:45 | Room 521B | Presentations in French
- Contact : Dr. Nathalie Casemajor (User:Seeris)
This panel is a collaborative initiative of Wikipedia Quebec Committee, an organization that promotes the various facets of free culture, and the founders of the website Les Classiques des sciences sociales, who created in 1999 a free digital library comprising more than 5,000 classical francophone texts in the field of social sciences. Other platforms, like the inter-university consortium Érudit, are developing a free access to academic and cultural publishers.
On the occasion of the Forum, we would like to promote the dialog between active members of these three organizations, scholars and participants, to discuss the international circulation of digital knowledge and academic publications. What is the situation of non occidental publications on these platforms? How to develop partnerships with non-occidental contributors and organizations in the francophone world to enhance their visibility and the access to non-western scientific publications?
Provoking exchanges between free culture advocators, professionals and scholars, this panel will question the diversity of scientific knowledge circulated online, the state of telecommunication infrastructures in so-called developing countries, the appropriation of digital technologies and networks, the visibility of non-western scientific publications online, and the hierarchies and inequalities in the circulation of knowledge in the field of social sciences.
