Wiki Tuesdays at Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec
editBibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) and Wikimedia Canada are collaborating to offer users of the Grande Bibliothèque in Montreal workshops in Wikipedia's French version. Starting on February, the first Tuesday of each month, a workshop is held where experienced Wikipedians guide all those who want to learn more about Wikipedia and how to contribute to the online encyclopedia. Each workshop has a specific theme around which the public is invited to contribute. BAnQ, which has a large collection of books and documents, ancient and modern, as well as rich archives around these themes, provides participants the documentation needed to write well documented Wikipedia articles. Participants find on site experienced contributors, and also librarians and archivists who specialize in the topics covered. The goal of these workshops is to improve Wikipedia's French content, increase the number of Quebec contributors to profit documentaries and professional resources BAnQ and better represent Quebec, New France, French Canada or more broadly, French America.

Dates and topics of workships
Towns and villages of Quebec (February 4, 2014)
edit- Wikipedia editors often start with their hometown. Many towns and villages of Quebec are already on Wikipedia, but many of them are very short, for example, "Saint-Pie-de-Guire". However, the smallest village is full of history, known personalities have perhaps emerged, there certainly has statistics on the population to add real estate assets to emphasize, etc.
People of New France (March 4, 2014)
edit- To enhance the quality and quantity of information available on Wikipedia on the French regime (1543-1763), the theme "Personality of New France" deserves more attention from editors. Other topics related to that time may also be added to the free encyclopedia.
Religion and religious communities in Quebec (April 8, 2014)
edit- Do you know Émilie Tavernier? The large square near the Grande Bibliothèque bears her name. Widow of Jean-Baptiste Gamelin, after only four years of marriage, the Blessed Emilie Gamelin founded the Sisters of Providence in Montreal. If Quebec's history is closely linked to religion, its representation on Wikipedia remains relatively low.
Quebec cinema (May 6, 2014)
edit- It's the French Louis Minier and Louis Pupier who introduced cinema in Quebec in 1896 with a projection of the works of Auguste and Louis Lumière. This was the first representation of cinema in Canada. With nearly 85 years of film production, the list of Quebec films is long and requires better coverage and intervention of editors.
A short history of crime (June 3, 2014)
edit- Large and small: the crimes are an integral part of any society and Quebec is no exception. Throughout the history of Quebec, there are sordid stories that have indelibly marked the collective memory, either by the nature of the crime, the identity of the victims or by the penalty imposed to the accused. Many Wikipedia articles about crime in Quebec deserve our attention.
Renewal of Wiki Tuesday
editIn the fall of 2014, BAnQ extended the project Tuesday is Wiki, but we decided to drop the thematic far too restrictive for participants. We have also incorporated a portion where we talk Wikisource; by association, BAnQ client is very interested in books and found that participants really like to do the transcription. We have uploaded to Commons several books of the Quebec public domain from the National Collection of BAnQ. Librarians at the workshops form the participants to find sources for Wikipedia, are found to transcription during the evening.
Atikamekw Wikipetia
editThe project started in 2013 on Manawan Atikamekw Reserve in Quebec to develop the Atikamew section on the Cree Wikipedia continued in 2014. The students of the Otapi High School on the reserve had to write articles in their native language on the Wikipedia. The project was supported by the school teachers, the Atikamekw "language keeper", and a graduate linguist student. Some teachers also wrote articles themselves. During this project the Atikamekw Wikipetia saw the creation of more than 100 articles, which is remarkable for a language that had no Wikipedia article at all not even two years ago. The project was publicized on a local radio and attracted contributors from the community as well.
Poirier Project
editBibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) and Wikimedia Canada are working together on a pilot called Poirier Project, in order to upload public domain images from the Conrad Poirier collection at BAnQ Vieux-Montréal. The pilot project was from June to December 2014.
Freelance photographer Conrad Poirier (1921-1968) sold his photographs to various newspapers and magazines including The Montreal Gazette, La Patrie and La Presse. A follower of the “new vision” (Nouvelle Vision, a photographic movement in the first half of the 20th century), he did social photography early on. He was interested in the working world, in street life and in popular events. Poirier’s work shows the developement of Montreal through historical photographs, and more widely the province of Quebec, Canada. With more than 20,000 photographs, the collection includes photographs taken between 1932 and 1960, which show the evolution of the Quebec metropolis – especially during the 1930s and 1940s. More broadly, the work of Poirier reflects the social changes underway in Quebec in the middle of the last century.
To date, approximately 1,700 photographs have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, and wikipedians are progressively add images to article. In 6 months, the photos have been seen over 20 millions of times.
This collaboration between a GLAM institution and Wikimedia is a first in Canada.

International Francophone Contribution Month
editThroughout October, the International Francophone Contribution Month, Wikipedia training workshops are organized in more than twenty cities of the Francophonie. Wikimedia Canada is the Chapter who's in charge to coordinate these events where experienced Wikimedians, students, and the local population get together to improve French Wikipedia and its sister projects. Whether in a college, a GLAM institution, in a library or in a pub, Wikimedians and novices mingle to share their experience, to initiate beginners to contribution to Wikimedia projects, or to simply get to know each other. In Africa, America, and Europe, the French-speaking Wikimedia chapters and user groups connect and collaborate with local institutions that host workshops and train local population on the basics of collaborative editing. For example, the city council of Bordeaux in France invites its citizens to meet in ten city museums. In Paris and Rennes, there are no less than 16 workshops to train new contributors. In Montreal, the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) welcomes new contributors over four days. Training workshops are multiplying in Algeria, Belgium, Benin, Burkina Faso, Switzerland, and Tunisia.
Local workshops are organized by passionate and experienced Wikimedians; the topic, location and Wikimedia project are chosen at their discretion. The International Francophone Contribution Month is a unifying project that takes few resources from local chapters and can be executed with little cost. The goals of the contribution month are:
- Promote the local production of content.
- Allow local contributors to meet each other in the different participating countries.
- Connect with institutions like libraries, archives, and colleges, etc.
Participants like these workshops because it’s “cool” to participate in Wikipedia. Institutions are delighted to be a host for contribution days because they share their educational mission with Wikimedia projects, and this is a modern approach for their members. Teachers and scholars are interested in the contribution month because they are looking for experienced Wikimedians to train their students in class. In short, this event organized by the collaborative WikiFranca promises to be a success again for this second year.

Wikisource: Projet de transcription
editThis page or section contains texts that need to be translated in English. |
