Talk:Grants/Requests/2020/WikiClub Québec: Registre des églises et objets historiques

Thanks Benoit Rochon for approving this grant. I've just been made aware of it, and its success, on my Commons talk page. I'm sure Wilfredor will take excellent quality photos. I remember my wiki friend Diliff undertook a similar project covering English cathedrals, and it produced a body of work that could easily have illustrated a coffee-table photography book. I have a concern about the request for greater participation in WLM/WLE/etc. Perhaps I am misunderstanding the request. These competitions typically have a restriction that material must be uploaded only during the competition, and I'm sure Wilfredor's church photographs would all be eligible for WLM. But I would not want to see them being saved-up on his home computer (at risk of data loss!), and only uploaded late in the year. The main purpose of those competitions is to encourage new and wider participation on Commons, rather than just to encourage the regulars to win prizes (nice though that is). I have seen on another country's WLM, one Commons photographer who was also a member of the local wiki club, saved up their photos from a grand-tour of villages, and then surprise surprise, won nearly all the places in the top 10 that year. -- Colin (talk) 14:54, 22 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
